Pocket Rocket: bargain BMW M135i in stock now

We have recently spent time on this blog looking at the finest German cars we had in stock – and then we looked at the best hot hatchbacks.

Well, here’s a fantastic new arrival that would easily slot into both categories: the BMW M135i, the car that re-wrote many of the rules and lifted many of the benchmarks when it was first unveiled in 2012.

One of the best things about the M135i is its lack of showiness. This is a hot hatch for grown ups. To the untrained eye, this looks like most other 1-series hatchbacks, and only a glance at the giveaway badge on the rear, or a glimpse of those unusually large tailpipes, lets people know what they’re looking at.

And what they’re looking at is another fantastic example of German engineering. Its three-litre turbocharged straight six engine delivers its 320bhp power to the rear wheels, with a resulting 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds. It manages all this while only outputting 175g/km of CO2, which is basically fairly miraculous.

The car swept away all before it in road tests, and its starting price of a smidgen over £30k also grabbed headlines. It was very difficult to get more bang for your buck (at least until the new Golf R came out – but many people shopping in this market would much prefer the involving handling that only a rear-wheel-drive BMW can offer).
